Today’s auto electrical systems are getting more intricate and are stressing the limits of current technology. But they are basically the same design as they have always been.

The battery is the main storage for the electrical current of the vehicle. The alternator produces the power used to maintain the battery storage charge and helps run all the electrical accessories, including the ignition and the engine control systems. The alternator is belt driven by the engine and produces an alternating current, which is then converted to 12 volts. The alternator does not constantly produce its maximum output, the regulator controls it and the battery buffers it from the electrical demands of the vehicle.

The other main component in your vehicles electrical system is the starter. It is only used a few times a day but it is critical to your vehicle’s operation. The starter is a small motor that turns the engine over through the flywheel, starting the combustion process by creating compression within the cylinders. Voltage to the starter is supplied directly from the battery and is controlled by a relay or solenoid operated by the ignition switch.
